What is Competency Assurance?

Competency Assurance is a management system which identifies where the risks lie in any particular operation and provides a framework to minimize the potential for those risks to become realised. It does this by identifying; what tasks an individual should be able to perform in his/her job; ensuring that standard descriptions are available of how those particular tasks should be performed; what training is required for staff to be able to perform those tasks; and then ensuring that individuals are competent to perform those tasks independently by testing them.

Why is Competency Assurance important?

Competency Assurance systems are becoming essential features of industrial management systems as they provide a tool which enables management to plan and monitor the workforce's training and competency verification status. Recent history has underlined the importance of Competency Assurance systems in instances of industrial incidents where investigators have found the causes to lie in a lack of training, or a lack of adequate operational procedures. Ultimate responsibility for shortcomings in these areas lies with the management, who need to be able to demonstrate that they have an active, robust structure in place which addresses the issues of training and work practices.
